Our linear life became a choose-your-own adventure book, with each gate opened the story went deeper.

Gravel grinds, gate latches clank, sheep baaa their hello as the gate-master rides on the outside of our car.

Mind the thistles...

“The first hint of dawn while the stars still shine, and I’m out of bed with the camera to capture it.

This would never happen at home.”

”Corporate ladder, should climb it” was replaced by “check out that gnarly tree, let’s climb it”.

Slipping on wet rocks, balancing on a log in the middle of the creek with camera in hand was an adventure, worth it to capture the trees framing our cabin with the saga of their trunks.

We began felt dwarfed by the trees instead of the unread messages in our inbox.

The crunch of leaves underfoot, snap of foraged kindling, whiff of burning eucalypt, crackle of fire, bubble of the billy.

Observing a burning log became the greatest antidote to burning out.

“Mindfulness is a cliche until it’s 10am and all you’ve done is watch the changing light for three hours”

Our cosy cabin nestled in a bowl of calm.

By the third day, the coffee tasted better. The steam patterns it produced were beautiful.

And that realisation was the gift we took home with us.
